​A love story

Richard Munden, president of interior surfaces and Melanie Valdez Mendez of Mekizodesigns, first crossed paths when Richard was looking for an idea for a sales presentation. Melanie was a struggling artist and just starting to make a name for herself as Mekizo Designs, a name she has created for her fashion design studio on Barrington St. NS. The collaboration with the two, not only ​created successful events in business but in life. The partnership brought success in their personal life and has also been a fruitful one, ​now with children, Keilana and Kaidin.​​​

Mekizodesigns was born as a fashion design name in Montreal. With the design and marketing background in hand, Melanie opened her design studio in Halifax, where she grew up. Her talent in design grew to different mediums such as painting, landscaping and even furniture design. Soon Zen gardens were made by hand with recycled materials and distributed by a chain of eco stores across Canada.

A move to Toronto on Yonge and Eglinton proved to be a successful one; and Fields of Grain, an organic Breadery and cafe was opened. There, she continued to sell her furniture and paintings. With fashion and design still on her mind, another move to Vancouver has introduced her to rug design. With Richard, a wool and flooring expert as her partner, interior surfaces was concieved. Interior surfaces has grown its clientele across Canada, North America and abroad. A line of area rugs label Mekizodesigns was added to better serve the designers with their residential and hospitality needs.
